Like a superhero arriving in the nick of time, rapper Lil Wayne has swooped in to stem the tide, however briefly, of both the record business’ general slump and the steeper slide that rap music has suffered in recent years.

The New Orleans rhymer’s “Tha Carter III” has become the first album to top the 1 million sales mark during its first week in stores since 50 Cent’s “The Massacre” more than three years ago. It also is the first rap album to top the national sales chart since Jay-Z’s “American Gangster” held that spot in November.

“I’m sure there are people who thought we wouldn’t see a 1 million copy week again,” Geoff Mayfield, Billboard’s charts director, said Wednesday. “This doesn’t mean there isn’t trouble in the music business, but it does mean if you have the right record at the right time, it’s still possible.”

The fact that Lil Wayne, who is less a household name outside hip-hop circles than Jay-Z, Kanye West, Eminem or 50 Cent, managed to hit that threshold speaks to the groundswell of popularity he has generated through a string of singles and mix-tapes released over the Internet in the last year.

His single “Lollipop,” which he sang Monday at his release-week concert at the House of Blues in West Hollywood, is one of the year’s biggest hits. In recent weeks it has ridden high on both Billboard’s Hot 100, which measures radio airplay, physical and digital sales, and the magazine’s Hot Digital Tracks chart, indicating its popularity as a download.

“There had been a lot of anticipation building for the album,” Mayfield said. “It shipped 1.3 million copies, which is a number like the old days.”

It’s a dramatic step up for Lil Wayne, whose previous album, “Tha Carter II,” sold 238,000 copies during its first week in stores in 2005, according to Nielsen SoundScan, and peaked at No. 2 on the chart. The closest anyone has come to the 1 million sales week since 50 Cent was West, whose “Graduation” album logged a first-week figure of 957,000 last September.

Rihanna & Chris Brown Announce Their Love At KFC

It’s not the most glamorous way of debuting as a young power couple, but accidents happen (especially since the creation of TMZ).

Well, despite their pretty convincing denials, it was bound to come out. Because, as producer Yasmine Richard pointed out when she recently caught Chris Brown visiting the remote video set of Rihanna and Maroon 5’s collabo, “I got friends and I got a best friend, but not one of them will come out to visit my behind in the middle of nowhere…Only MY MAN…”

Queen Latifah to Marry Longterm Partner

After the state of California overturned a ban on gay marriages, many expected a rash of same-sex marriages to be scheduled in the state. On the celeb side of things, it seems that Queen Latifah will be amongst the first big stars to marry her longterm partner.

According to this week’s edition of the National Enquirer, Queen Latifah plans to marry her partner of five years, personal trainer Jeannette Jenkins.

Queen Latifah has been very tight-lipped about her relationship with Jenkins, and told Ebony magazine in 2007 that she would not comment on the rumor that Jenkins was her girlfriend. She didn’t deny it, she was just annoyed that she was asked.

“No comment on that at all. I’m done commenting on all that … It’s ridiculous, I know me and that’s all I need to know.

“And if the readers don’t know me, then that’s one part they aren’t going to get to know. Those are my people but they don’t sleep with me,” she says in a very even tone that is very consistent with her relaxed mood. “It feels so invasive. It’s the one thing I don’t think people need to know about.”

And then even before that, in 2006, she told Essence magazine:

“If I’m not going to tell you what guy I’m dating, I sure wouldn’t tell you I’m dating a girl.”

Neither Queen Latifah nor her partner have ever officially come out. Queen Latifah has, however, given her special friend attention and treatment that suggests they’re more than just good friends. Last year she bought Jeannette a Range Rover, and had it delivered to a restaurant to surprise her.

According to the National Enquirer, the couple are “planning an intimate ceremony with close famiy and friends.” They are also reportedly interested in adopting an American baby.

Jessica Alba, who married her long-time boyfriend Cash Warren three weeks ago, has given birth to baby girl, according to US Weekly magazine.

Alba, 27, best-known for her roles in the TV drama “Dark Angel” and the movie “Fantastic Four,” announced last December that she was pregnant and engaged to Warren.

Alba met Warren, 29, on the set of “Fantastic Four” in 2004 where he was a director’s assistant. Warren has since moved into producing.

US Weekly said Alba gave birth to her daughter at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles over the weekend.

The couple married in a quiet ceremony at the Beverly Hills courthouse on May 19.

Prince: The Artist Formerly Known as 49

Prince, who’s noted for over-the-top parties and celeb-infested jam sessions, celebrated his 50th birthday with a whisper this weekend.

Starting on Friday evening, he hit his sometimes haunt Teddy’s, at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, with pals for drinks.

The artist must have been feeling uninhibited, as no security team was on hand to sweep him into a waiting car. Prince exited the hotel and strolled down Hollywood Boulevard among the regular folk.

On Saturday, his actual birthday, he stepped out with two young brunettes (pretty modest for the milestone day) for the Lo Hi Fi party at Hollywood spot Green Door.

Prince and his ladies kept to themselves, while just a table away Robert Downey Jr. held court with 10 pals, including comic Richard Lewis.

Here’s hoping the Purple One doesn’t make all this moderate fun a habit.

Janet Feuds With Her Label

When Janet Jackson was asked what the next single will be off her album, her response wasn’t quite what I expected.

She said, “That’s pretty difficult to say, only because of the record label at this point. We started off with Feedback and the label and myself haven’t quite seen eye to eye since the Feedback single so they’ve kind of basically stopped all promotion. I’m trying to figure out a way to say this, but just to say it and to be quite honest, they just stopped all promotion whatsoever on the album so I don’t think you’re going to hear another single off this album.”

What a diss!

Dwayne Johnson Retires The Rock

Dwayne Johnson, known better as The Rock, has decided to ditch his nickname. We’ll probably all still refer to him as that, but he’s looking to reinvent himself in movies.

“I’m aware of everything that comes with that nickname, and I just think there’s a lot more you can do without it,” he says. “But I wanted it to happen naturally, from ‘The Rock’ to Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson to ‘Dwayne Johnson.’

Nice, natural progression, eh? Dwayne has Get Smart coming out in two weeks, and another movie in the works, so we’ll see if this name change is a career booster for him
