Alicia Keys to Take On James Bond?

Alicia Keys as a Bond Girl?

Not exactly.

But I just got word that the songbird is the top contender to sing the title song for the next James Bond flick, Quantum of Solace.

No official announcement has been made, but a source tells me, “I believe Alicia is the winner.”

There have been a lot of rumors surrounding the highly coveted spot to belt one out for 007. A gaggle of artists reportedly submitted songs for consideration to producers of the 22nd Bond film, including Beyonce, Leona Lewis, Duran Duran, Jack White, Duffy and, most recently, Annie Lennox.

Amy Winehouse was the first singer linked to the movie, but she apparently never finished recording her song with über-producer Mark Ronson.

A rep for Keys declined to comment. A rep for the movie said there was “no info” available right now about a potential title song.

The flick, starring Daniel Craig as the silver screen’s most famous spy, is scheduled for a November release.

Miss Universe contest puts spotlight on Vietnam

I got the chance to meet Miss USA (Crystle Stewart) last year before she won Miss  Texas and Miss USA. Anyways…

Eighty of the world’s most beautiful women have converged on a stretch of the Vietnamese coast better known for war than glamour.

They were preparing for the 57th annual Miss Universe competition, which will be broadcast by NBC to millions of viewers across the globe on Sunday night.

Like her 84 million compatriots, Vietnam’s 20-year-old contestant is hoping the show will let the world know about the new Vietnam, where commerce and fashion are thriving and war has become a fading memory.

“I want to introduce my country and my culture and our history to everybody,” said Nguyen Thuy Lam, whose traditional costume is a Vietnamese ao dai, a colorful silk pantsuit. “I feel very confident when I wear the ao dai. I wish everyone would wear it and feel confident too.”

The contest will be held in Nha Trang, a seaside city located next to a major American airbase during the Vietnam War, which ended in 1975.

Given the history of hostilities between the two nations, Miss USA Crystle Stewart has been impressed by the warmth of her Vietnamese hosts.

“The USA and Vietnam are working together, in cooperation and peace,” said Stewart, a Texan who is writing a motivational book. “Hopefully we’ll be role models for other countries.”

The show will be co-hosted by British pop singer Mel B, known as “Scary Spice” during her days with the Spice Girls. She will be joined by American television personality Jerry Springer, host of “America’s Got Talent” and a long-running tabloid talk show that often climaxes with angry guests cussing and brawling with one another.

Springer is clearly enjoying his new Miss Universe job.

“Whoa!” Springer said during an interview with The Associated Press on Saturday, as dozens of contestants strutted across the stage during a rehearsal. “This is a plum assignment.”

The 80 contestants have been in Vietnam for nearly four weeks now, receiving intense coverage from the Vietnamese media as they met with local dignitaries, frolicked in their bikinis and participated in various charity events.

They were hard at work Saturday preparing for the show.

Miss Serbia, 21-year-old Bojana Boric, is eager to compete in the swimsuit competition.

“It’s a very good feeling,” said Boric, who enjoys modeling, cooking and extreme sports. “It’s your moment. It’s the moment when everyone will see your face, and everyone will remember.”

Beauty pageants have been derided by many as exploitative of women, celebrating superficiality over substance. Sweden 2007 contestant dropped out after coming under pressure from pageant critics in her homeland, and the country is not sending a delegate this year.

But beauty contests are extremely popular in Vietnam, which is also hoping to host the 2010 Miss World competition.

After years of war and poverty, the country has been booming economically, and high-end cosmetics and fashion stores have sprouted up in Hanoi, the Vietnamese capital, and Ho Chi Minh City, the country’s southern business hub.

“It’s great to have Miss Universe competition here in Vietnam,” said 18-year-old high school student Nguyen Thi Kieu My. “It will help to promote Vietnam’s image in the world and bring in more tourists.”

Bernie Mac makes off-color joke at Obama event

Comedian Bernie Mac endured some heckling and a campaign rebuke during a surprise appearance Friday night at a fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

Toward the end of a 10-minute standup routine at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Chicago, the 50-year-old star of “The Bernie Mac Show” joked about menopause, sexual infidelity and promiscuity, and used occasional crude language.

“My little nephew came to me and he said, ‘Uncle, what’s the difference between a hypothetical question and a realistic question?'” Mac said. “I said, I don’t know, but I said, ‘Go upstairs and ask your mother if she’d make love to the mailman for $50,000.'”

As the joke continued, the punchline evoked an angry response from at least one person in the audience, who said it was offensive to women.

“It’s not funny. Let’s get Barack on,” a man shouted from the crowd, which paid $2,300 each to support the Illinois senator.

About 15 minutes later, Obama tried to smooth things over with a joke of his own.

“We can’t afford to be divided by race. We can’t afford to be divided by region or by class and we can’t afford to be divided by gender, which by the way, that means, Bernie, you’ve got to clean up your act next time,” Obama said. “This is a family affair. By the way, I’m just messing with you, man.”

The incident drew response from Obama’s campaign, which criticized Mac for his choice of material.

“Sen. Obama told Bernie that he doesn’t condone these statements and believes what was said was inappropriate,” spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement after the event.

Mac, a Chicago native, said he’s a longtime Obama supporter and called the presumptive Democratic nominee a “man’s man” while offering him advice for the duration of the campaign trail.

“People like rumors. They’re going to say things like you was at the club with Lil’ Kim, and you and Kanye West got into a fist fight,” he said. “You can’t get upset. You’ve got to keep hope alive.”

Mac’s appearance was Obama’s first celebrity event of the evening. Later at a Lincoln Park nightclub, Obama spoke to a raucous crowd of music fans, who paid up to $500 per person to see a performance by Wilco lead singer Jeff Tweedy, and two other band members.

“Before these guys go, I want them to know that I had heard a rumor that they had suggested that I had nothing by them on my iPod,” Obama said. “That is not true. I love Wilco.”

He checked into the hospital in Bend, Ore. under a fake name after going into labor early Monday morning and his room was sealed off, away from other expectant moms. The baby was delivered by C-section later that day.

Will Smith ‘s soon-to-open private school is not a Scientology facility, as some reports have suggested, the academy’s director said.

Smith and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, have founded the New Village Academy, scheduled to open in September.

The school will use instructional methods developed by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard called study technology. And a few teachers belong to the church.

But the couple say they are not Scientologists, and the academy’s director insists the facility has no religious affiliation.

“We are a secular school, and just like all nonreligious independent schools, faculty and staff do not promote their own religions at school or pass on the beliefs of their particular faith to children,” New Village Academy director Jacqueline Olivier told the Los Angeles Times.

Oliver said some of the school’s staffers are Scientologists, Muslim, Christian or Jewish.

In addition to reading and math, the school offers classes on yoga, robotics and etiquette.

Former “American Idol” Ruben Studdard has married Surata Zuri McCants at a church in a suburb of Birmingham, Alabama. But there was no singing during the 30-minute ceremony — just an exchange of vows, prayers and music provided by a string ensemble. A reporter from The Birmingham News attended the ceremony.

The groom, nicknamed the “Velvet Teddy Bear” on “Idol” for his big frame and sonorous voice, wore a black tuxedo with white bow tie for Saturday’s ceremony. His bride wore a white and ivory wedding gown.

Alabama will be their home as the 29-year-old-singer gets set to release a new album later this year.

Naomi Campbell: Racist slur sparked air rage

British Airways rejected claims of racism on Saturday after supermodel Naomi Campbell, who pleaded guilty to assault in a foul-mouthed “air rage” incident, said she was likened to a black “Golliwog” doll during the flight.

BA said it did not accept the accusation made by Campbell, who was convicted of assault on Friday and sentenced to 200 hours of unpaid community work, that someone on the flight called her a “Golliwog supermodel.”

“British Airways does not accept any allegations of racism,” the airline said in a statement. “We are proud of our diversity.

“We have strict policies concerning dignity at work and have long-standing training programs on diversity and inclusion.”

Model’s accusations
Campbell, 38, told Sky News in an interview that her flash of air rage, in which she assaulted two police officers, swore repeatedly and screamed abuse at the captain of the Los Angeles-bound BA flight, was partly prompted by racist comments.

“I was called a racial name on that flight and that was part of my reaction,” she said. “I was called a ‘Golliwog supermodel’ — I don’t think that’s really fair, do you?”

Asked who had used the term, which refers to a black rag doll from children’s literature, Campbell said: “Someone on the flight, not the passenger.”

During Campbell’s court case, prosecutors said Campbell ordered the airline captain to find her missing luggage and became violent when police tried to escort her off the aircraft.

The model pleaded guilty to assaulting two police officers and to a public order offense. Neither she nor her lawyers mentioned racist comments during her court case.

As well as the community service sentence, Campbell was ordered to pay 200 pounds ($395) compensation to one of the police officers, 150 pounds to the captain and 2,300 pounds in fines.

Apology for police
In the Sky interview, Campbell apologized to London’s Metropolitan Police force, but added: “As for British Airways, I just think they are disgusting.”

Campbell is famous for her fiery temper and has been in trouble with the law before.
